The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, South East Zone, has called for implementation of laws prohibiting violence against women in the country.
The call was made by NAWOJ, Vice President, South East Zone, Comrade Stella Igboka, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, UNIZIK, Awka, in commemoration of this year’s International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women.
Comrade Igboka, who spoke on already existing laws, stressed the need for strict implementation of VAPP laws in order to prosecute perpetrators as well as obtain justice for victims
She listed NAWOJ programmes for the campaign to Include Advocacy, Road shows, speak up and virtual campaigns, expressing hope that those programmes would help drive the message home.
The NAWOJ South East VP further highlighted some forms of gender based violence such as child marriage, trafficking for sex and slavery, intimate partner violence, physical punishment, sexual, emotional and psychological violence like rape, which she noted, have been on the increase in recent times.
She added that NAWOJ as an association would, through its advocacies and sensitization programmes, continually ensure that victims of abuse and violent attacks are given the required platform to get access
The Vice President also stressed the need for proper funding of Non-governmental bodies to be able to sensitize the citizens on their fundamental human rights, calling for global action to bridge funding gaps and ensure essential services for survivals of gender violence.
She further tasked NAWOJ Chairpersons in the South East comprising Enugu, Ebonyi Abia Imo and Anambra States to join in the on going International campaign to ensure effective sensitization of Women against violence in their states.
