In a historic victory, the Super Falcons of Nigeria have broken their Olympic jinx and qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympics after a 16-year absence from the competition.
Led by Coach Randy Waldrum, the Super Falcons secured their qualification after a goalless draw against Bayana Bayana of South Africa, winning 1-0 on aggregate.
The resilient Falcons displayed a solid defense in the second leg match held in Pretoria, denying all goal-scoring opportunities initiated by the South African team.
Their journey to qualification began with a 1-0 win over Banyana Banyana in the first leg fixture played at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja.
A first-half penalty by Rasheedat Ajibade set the Falcons on the right path, securing an advantage that ultimately sealed their qualification.
Despite close chances from players like Uchenna Kanu, the Falcons held firm, with goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie delivering a confident performance.
This historic qualification marks the first time the Super Falcons will participate in the women’s football event at the Olympics since 2008.
Having only previously played at the Olympics in 2000, 2004, and 2008, the Super Falcons are set to make a triumphant return to the global stage in Paris, France, from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
