Suspected mentally deranged cop detained for killing bystander in C’Rivers

A police inspector, Effiong Bassey, has been taken into custody after allegedly shooting three people in Calabar, Cross River State.

According to the state police command, the incident occurred early Sunday at Atakpa Divisional Headquarters, where Bassey had returned from night duty.

Police spokesperson Ugbo Irene stated that the officer exhibited abnormal behavior before the shooting. He was eventually subdued and disarmed.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing, and the Assistant Inspector General of Police has visited the victims in the hospital, offering support for their treatment.

The police have assured the public that they are engaging key stakeholders to de-escalate tensions in the community.
