Tambuwal’s Aide Denied Bail, Sent To Prison Over Alleged Defamation

Shafi’u Umar Tureta, Special Assistant to former Sokoto Governor Aminu Tambuwal, has been remanded in prison by a Chief Magistrates Court in Sokoto for allegedly defaming Governor Ahmad Aliyu and his wife, Hajiya Fatima Ahmed Aliyu, on social media.

Tureta faces charges of circulating injurious falsehood.

The case, first mentioned on August 26, involves accusations dated July 18, 2024. While Tureta denies the charges, his bail application was objected to by the prosecution.

Chief Magistrate Fatima Hassan adjourned the case to September 18 for a ruling on bail and ordered Tureta’s detention in a correctional center.
