Umudioka In Mourning: Elders And Youths Demand Justice For Brutal Murder Of Ichie Nwobu

The traditional elders of Umudioka village in Awka, known as Ndi Ichie Umudioka, have strongly condemned the gruesome murder of one of their own, Ichie Michael Chiweze Nwobu, who was killed in his bedroom on Sunday, March 2, 2025.

According to reports, the 84-year-old elder was alone at home when the tragic incident occurred. His wife and young son had left for church, leaving him vulnerable to the attack. He was reportedly stabbed multiple times before he was discovered lifeless.

In a press briefing, Chief Joseph Nweke, Secretary-General of Ndi Ichie Umudioka, expressed shock and sorrow, stating that such an atrocity has never happened in the history of the community. He called on Governor Chukwuma Soludo, security agencies, and stakeholders to take swiftaction to apprehend the perpetrators and prevent a recurrence. While some community members considered a protest at the government house, the elders decided to first express their grief and demand justice through formal channels.

Similarly, Chief Fidelis Nwaokike, the administrative head of Umudioka, described the killing as “a heinous and reprehensible act of brutality” that has left the entire community in deep sorrow. He urged law enforcement agencies to thoroughly investigate and bring those responsible to justice.

The Youth Chairman of Umudioka, Mr. Christopher Chijioke Uzo, recounted how he received a distressing phone call between 8:30 and 9:00 AM informing him of the murder. Upon arrival at the scene, they found Chief Nwobu already dead, with gruesome injuries to his body and throat. He echoed the call for authorities to act swiftly, warning that the enraged youth might take matters into their own hands if justice is not served.

Speaking on behalf of the bereaved family, Emeka Nnaemeka, a nephew of the deceased, revealed that he had planned to meet with his uncle before receiving the heartbreaking news of his death. He noted that Chief Nwobu’s tenants were conspicuously absent at the time of the attack, raising suspicions that the murder may have been premeditated.

One of the prominent stakeholders in the community, Chief Anayo Obiako, a former youth chairman, emphasized that the nature of this crime is unprecedented, not just in Umudioka but in the entire Awka community. He cautioned that failure to bring the culprits to book could spark unrest among the youths.

The entire Umudioka community is mourning the loss of a respected elder, described as a peaceful and honest man who transitioned from civil service to business before his demise. The elders, youths, and stakeholders have unanimously called on Governor Soludo, the Anambra State Police Command, and all relevant authorities to ensure that justice is served swiftly.

The tragedy has left the community in shock, and until justice is done, the people of Umudioka will remain on edge, demanding answers and accountability.
