A new report by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has revealed that terror group, Boko Haram has killed about 350,000 people in the northeast region.
The report, released on Thursday, was released in partnership with Nigeria’s Ministry of Finance,
According to the report, the death toll directly linked to the group’s violence has been estimated to be around 35,000, but UNDP noted that the total death toll was 10 times, revealing that for every one person killed by the insurgency, at least 9 other persons lost their lives to the ripple effects of their terror acts – which affected agriculture, food and water, trade and access to healthcare.
The agency also stated that if the conflict continues to 2030, more than 1.1 million people may die.
Nigeria’s north-east region has been battling insurgency since 2009 which has resulted in thousands of deaths and mass displacement of residents in Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe states.
Attacks on peasant communities in the region have continued despite claims by the government that the insurgency had been defeated.
