Anambra Environment Commissioner Assures Cleaner, Friendlier Environment

Anambra State Government plans to establish sewage treatment plants which will deliver a cleaner and more environmentally friendly waste-water articulation in the state.
The Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Felix Odimegwu, disclosed this when he and the ministry’s officials appeared before the House Committee on Budget and Appropriation in the ongoing 2022 Revised Budget Defense at the Assembly Complex, Awka.
Odimegwu said the initiative was part of Gov. Charles Soludo’s led-administration policy to make the state cleaner, greener, livable and prosperous for its residents.
He said that sewage treatment plants treat the wastes, either from commercial or domestic dwellings by circulating air to encourage the growth of bacteria which would break it down.
According to the Commissioner, the goal is to deliver a much cleaner, more environmentally friendly wastewater.
“Currently, we are engaging some organizations who will help us with recycling of biomass wastes.
“We plan to have for the first time, a sewage treatment plant in Anambra which will be situated at Nkwelle in Oyi Local Government Area (LGA).
“We also plan to have Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) that can be converted to energy; we are currently in discussion with about three companies from outside the country who have indicated interests in coming to help us convert our wastes to energy.’’
The Commissioner said that the state would soon commence the systematic application of house-to-house pick-up of wastes to gradually phase out dumping of refuse on the streets or roads.
He urged households to bag their wastes and put them in a bin where refuse contractors would pick them on scheduled days, adding that Keke trucks would be used for waste pick-ups in rural and remote areas.
Odimegwu urged recycling companies to partner with the state government to derive a circular economy and eliminate wastes on our streets and roads. (MOI)
