Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) have apologized to Nigerians following another collapse of the national power grid, which caused widespread blackouts across the country. This marks the third collapse in seven days and the eighth this year.
According to the National System Operator, grid supply plummeted from 3,041.72MW to just 47MW on Saturday morning, leaving only the Azura-Edo IPP on the grid. Eko Electricity Distribution Company confirmed the outage, assuring customers that efforts were underway to restore supply.
Dr. Muda Yusuf, Director of the Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE), expressed concern over the frequent grid collapses, stressing the need for energy reforms to decentralize power sources and promote renewable energy.
Meanwhile, Ndidi Mbah, spokesperson for the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), explained that a transformer explosion at the Jebba Transmission Substation triggered the disturbance. Engineers have since isolated the fault and begun restoring power.
