Unidentified gunmen on Saturday morning attacked Umuguma Division Police Station in Owerri West Local Government Area headquarters in Imo State.
Sources claimed that the attack left two Police operatives dead.
The gunmen allegedly invaded the station during the early hours of Saturday at about 4:30 am, while the operation lasted for over 30 minutes.
A community source, Mr Okechukwu, said they heard heavy explosives in successions.
According to him, “Nobody slept here, we were scared to leave our homes but we knew it was a heavy bombardment. Unfortunately, they killed our own brother, Ifeanyi, who was trying to defend the station and his people by extension”.
The sources said they overwhelmed the security operatives during the operation which left cars and properties destroyed.
Large number of people as early as 7.00am besieged the station to catch a glimpse of the incident.
Confirming the attack, the Imo State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Michael Abattam, however, said that no life was lost and no firearm was carted away.
He said, “Yes, there was an incident, but our men repelled them, no life was lost and neither did we lose any firearm. They threw in dynamite which ignited the roof but our men engaged them. No life was lost and no arms were lost”.
