The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered a major depot for expired and falsified drugs in Umumeje village, Osisioma Ngwa, Abia State.
The illegal operation, located near Ariaria International Market, involved repackaging expired medicines for resale, posing serious health risks.
Seized items included expired potassium chloride, allergy medications, immune boosters, and cholesterol treatments. Machines used to alter expiry dates were also found.
Several suspects were arrested, but the prime suspect remains at large. NAFDAC, in collaboration with security agencies, is intensifying efforts to curb counterfeit drug distribution. The agency is also reviewing its laws to impose stricter penalties on individuals involved in this illegal trade.
