In another development, Protesters numbering over one thousand from Ndiowu Community in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State stormed Government House, Awka, over alleged imposition of caretaker committee to pilot the Afairs of Ndiowu Town Union.
The protesters alleged that some cabals in the community discarded their peaceful town union election, which produced an Exco led by Chike Emenike as President-General and set up a caretaker committee against their wish.
They carried placards inscriptions such as “CARETAKER IS OVER IN NDIOWU,” “NDIOWU DESERVES GOOD PEOPLE- ORIENTED LEADERSHIP NOT CARETAKER,” “ENOUGH IS ENOUGH,” “NO MORE CARETAKER COMMITTEE.
Addressing journalists, a youth leader, Mr. Obiorah Mgbemena, disclosed that three town union elections have been conducted in the community which were all rejected by the cabal, who alleged that Governor Willie Obiano administration was uncomfortable with the out come of the polls.
Speaking also, a woman leader, Mrs. Virginia Orji, explained that the town has been operating under Caretaker Committee for five years which, according to her, had held the community backwards.
Contributing, another member of the community, Mrs. Obiageli Nwafor, revealed that Ndiowu women tasked themselves five hundred naira each to build an ultra modern market at Orie Bagu Market, alleging that the caretaker committee leadership lied to the Government that the market was the product of State Government’s twenty million naira Community Choose Your Project Initiative.
Mrs. Nwafor appealed to Governor Willie Obiano to restore peace in Ndiowu.
Presenting their petition to the State Government, the Secretary of the community, Mr. Onyeka Orji, explained that the tenure of the Caretaker Committee had expired and called for conduct of election in Ndiowu community.
Addressings the protesters onbehalf of the Governor, Secretary to the State Government, Professor Solo Chukwulobelu, enjoined them to remain law abiding, pledging to channel their grievances as contained in their protest letter to the State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftancy Affairs for immediate action.
Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Mr. Uche Okafor, commended the protesters for peaceful demonstration.
