Foremost political scientist, Professor Bolaji Akinyemi, has urged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to tread carefully in dealings with China. Speaking on Channels Television, Akinyemi highlighted the ongoing competition between China and the United States for global economic dominance.

He emphasized the importance of meeting debt obligations, noting that Nigeria has debts not only to China but also to the U.S. and other nations. Akinyemi warned that Nigeria’s failure to fulfill its agreements could lead to the seizure of its assets, as seen recently when a French court ruled in favor of a Chinese firm, allowing it to seize Nigerian presidential jets over a long-standing dispute.

The professor cautioned against state governors entering deals with foreign entities without proper oversight, stating that Nigeria, as a sovereign nation, would ultimately be held accountable for any defaults. He called for discipline in repaying borrowed funds to maintain Nigeria’s international standing and avoid further complications.
