Thirteen kidnap victims have been successfully rescued by Nigerian army troops along Ngodo-Isuochi Road in Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia, Nigeria’s south-east.

According to the statement by army spokesperson, Brigadier-General Onyema Nwachukwu, on Monday, the rescue operation was conducted in response to a distress call received on Saturday.

The distress call reported an attack on a Sienna vehicle and an L300 Mitsubishi bus, resulting in the kidnapping of their passengers. The attackers initially held the victims hostage before moving them into nearby bushes. Acting on information from witnesses at the scene, the troops pursued the kidnappers and tracked them into the bushes.

Brigadier-General Nwachukwu said that on the first day of the search and rescue operation, five victims were extricated, and further efforts on Sunday, July 23, 2023, led to the rescue of eight additional victims, making a total of thirteen rescued persons.

The rescued victims have been handed over to the local police authorities in the council area to facilitate their reunion with their families.

Although specific details about the kidnapping and the identities of the victims were not provided, attached photographs to the statement indicated that there were five women and eight men among the rescued individuals.

The army has appealed to all Nigerians to continue to support the troops and other security agencies with “timely and actionable information” to fight insecurity in the country.
