Anambra State Chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has appealed to the State Ministry of Education to look Into some of their problems especially as regards resumption of schools.
The Chairman of the State NUT, Comrade Mrs Chibueze Nnonye, who made the appeal expressed dismay that the Commissioner of Education, Professor Kate Omenugha, does not carry them along in taking certain decisions which is capable of causing serious confusion and problems in the state education sector.
The State NUT Chairman claimed that nothing has been put in place in preparation for schools resumption while there are no COVID-19 response teams in any of the schools.
Mrs Nnonye who stated this while interacting with newsmen in Awka, Anambra State capital, on their readiness for school resumption, said they have complained to the Head of Service and other relevant authorities in government but that nothing has been done.
According to her, the Commissioner does not involve them in anything about teachers and the education sector especially on the ministry’s plans towards resumption of schools.
On the e-training, the State NUT Chairman alleged that the teachers were forced to pay 8,000 naira, claiming that the NUT was not aware of the plans and what the programme is all about.
She also claimed that the teachers are being intimidated alleging that while some teachers, especially the newly employed ones, are being owed 12 months salaries, old teachers are being owed seven months.
The State NUT Chairman also alleged that some of the teachers are being forced to fill e-training forms online because they said it would be used against them during promotion.
Nnonye said that even as students prepare to resume, schools are not conducive for learning because those schools need fumigation, sanitisers and running water as well as medical personnel to check students’ health status before being admitted into schools and none is available.
She expressed worries over teachers and students, contracting the disease as all necessary COVID-19 precautionary measures were not in places.
Reacting, the Commissioner, said that the NUT executives were being carried along in all programmes and decisions in the education sector.
She said the NUT were part of the online meeting they held recently on schools resumption.
