The Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON) has expressed dissatisfaction over the ban of some media outlets in Nigeria by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).
Following the reports of the EndSARS protests and killings of peaceful protesters at Lekki, Lagos State, NBC , on Monday, sanctioned African Independent Television (AIT) , Channels Television and Arise Television for what it called unprofessional EndSARS broadcast.
Reacting , the chairperson of BON , Sa’a Ibrahim in a letter dated October 27, 2020, said that the organization is saddened at the sanction.
The letter said that in a Democratic Nation, applications of the law should have procedures before sanction and thereby requested that a formal query be issued to each of the stations involved and be given the opportunity to defend themselves before any action is taken against them.
It also demanded for the withdrawal of the sanctions pending their responses to the Commission.
BON appealed to the National Broadcasting Commission to be flexible in the application of sanctions, especially in a period like this.
