The number of Nigerians applying for visas to the United Kingdom have increased in recent times. The British High Commissioner, Catriona Laing made this known on Sunday while talking to journalists.

Giving reasons for the recent increase, she said that there are Nigerian-origin people in UK which makes it a destination delight for people that have family and friends there, while also pointing out that the English language makes it easier for people too.

She also mentioned education as a factor propelling people to move to the UK as most that have experienced the educational system in Uk will always desire to come back for more. She said that following their change in policy, students can remain for a while after their studies, depending on their duration of study, to enable them to look for work.

She said that there is a labour shortage in the UK at the moment, but they have to balance it as they do not want to be responsible for the massive brain drain from Nigeria as the country equally needs its talented people.

Ms Laing also said that the United Kingdom is encouraging institutions and facilities in possession of the Benin artefacts to return them to Nigeria.
