Tony Elumelu, the Chairman of United Bank for Africa plc, has called on the United States, US, to focus on developing the youths in Africa and reduce the amount and energy spent on giving aid to the countries in the region. He said that young people who are engaged in bettering their own selves and their communities will reject the lure of extremism and crime.

Speaking at the recent event co-hosted by the United States Institute of Peace and the Heritage Foundation in Washington, he expressed the opinion that for Africa, a strong private sector, urged on by entrepreneurs was critical to advancing peace, stability and development.

He said that the US should ensure aid makes it past the last mile to its intended recipients and purposes and also support institutional infrastructure that helps address sustainability and the US policymakers and financial institutions should impress on African leaders how their own political goals and private sector successes are linked.
